Mount Tumbledown
Mount Tumbledown – History, Challenge & Reflection
Standing at 244m (801ft) above sea level, Mount Tumbledown is one of the many hills of the Falkland Islands. Although locals proudly refer to it as a mountain, it does not meet the standard classification, as it is under 300m in height. What it lacks in elevation, however, it more than makes up for in history, challenge, and significance.

A Site of Historic Importance
Mount Tumbledown was one of the final and most significant battle sites of the 1982 conflict. The war began on 2nd April and ended on 14th June, lasting 74 days. The battle for Tumbledown played a crucial role in the liberation and regaining of the Islands.
Each year on 14th June, the Falkland Islands commemorate Liberation Day, paying respects to the soldiers who served and the civilians who lost their lives during the conflict. Personnel from Mount Pleasant Complex, members of the Falkland Islands Defence Force, and local youth groups including Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, and Brownies lay wreaths and take part in a memorial parade.

The Tumbledown Run
Mount Tumbledown also hosts the annual “Tumbledown Run” for students of Falkland Islands Community School (FICS). Students from Years 7 to 11 take part in a challenging run or walk covering most of the mountain.
A long-standing tradition, the record time to complete the course is approximately 15 minutes. Due to the rugged terrain, this is a challenge not to be underestimated.

Your Guided Experience
Your driver will collect you from your chosen location and take you to the mountain. From the car park, you will begin your ascent.
Weather conditions can change quickly, and the terrain may be wet or uneven underfoot. Suitable footwear — hiking boots or trail shoes — is essential. Bringing a jacket and hat is strongly recommended in case of wind or colder conditions.
The total duration depends on your level of fitness. As a reference, the guide can complete the hike in just under an hour and maintains a very high level of fitness. You are welcome to take as many breaks as needed. If you require walking poles, please bring your own.
At the summit, we encourage time to rest, enjoy refreshments, and take in the views while reflecting on the achievement of reaching the top. After signing the visitors’ book and taking photographs, you will begin your descent — which is often quicker than the climb.
Your guide will then return you to any location in Stanley of your choosing.
