You’ve Got Questions - We’ve Got Answers

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our drivers all hold current and 'clean' automatic/manual car and mini-bus licenses. Some have a certification in Tour Guiding.

WHAT TYPE OF CERTIFICATION DO YOUR DRIVERS OBTAIN?

Absolutely, we can accommodate and adapt to your needs, day dependant. See the 'Services' page for more on tours.

I NEED TRANSPORTATION FOR A MULTI-DAY TRIP. CAN YOU HELP ME?

We are able to offer Airport Transportations from FIGAS and Mount Pleasant Complex. At the moment we do not offer cabs from farm settlements.

CAN I RESERVE YOUR SERVICE FOR OUT OF TOWN TRIPS?

You must always adhere to the Countryside Code, staying a distance of at least 6 metres away from all wildlife such as penguins and seals. Always keep a low-tone of voice. Give animals the right of way, walking around them never through. You can see more information on the Countryside Code page.

CAN I TOUCH THE PENGUINS AND OTHER WILDLIFE?

You should never smoke when out and about in the nature and wildlife areas. This is to prevent any wild fires from happening. Please see the 'Countryside Code' page.  We don't allow smoking in our taxi's either, to avoid any customers harm if they have trouble breathing and we pride ourselves on making sure our cabs are as 'fresh as daisies.'

WHEN I AM ON A TOUR OR IN A TAXI, CAN I SMOKE?

We accept the following currencies: Falkland Island Pound (FKP) Great British Pound (GBP) United States Dollar (USD) Euro (EUR)

WHAT CURRENCY DO YOU ACCEPT?

Card Payments (chip/pin and contactless) from the following companies: Visa Mastercard American Express Maestro Visa Electron Vpay Logo

DO YOU TAKE CARD PAYMENTS?

The islands has approx. 3500 residents with about 10% living in 'camp' and the rest in Stanley. There is a military base that holds over 1500 military and civilians as well.

HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE IN THE FALKLAND ISLANDS?

Stanley is the only town/city. There is a military base approx. 45 minutes away from the Capital. We have many farm settlements as well, the biggest being Goose Green (East Falkland), Fox Bay and Port Howard (West Falkland), North Arm (East Falkland) and Hill Cove (West Falkland) but there are about 70 active farms altogether and possibly a few more.

IS STANLEY THE ONLY TOWN?

No you can't, we may be small but you would need a few weeks in the Falklands to get a great feel for the life here and all the different types of wildlife and scenes. Many people ask for a tour around the islands, but if you're coming on a cruise ship for only a few hours, booking an early morning tour with a different company to Volunteers Point or Bluff Cove is a must and then a short trip with us to Gypsy Cove, Yorke Bay and around the City is a great way to spend the day in the islands, leaving plenty of time for souvenir shopping. If you are here on a long-term stay we recommend booking trips to the outer islands such as Bleaker, Sea Lion, Saunders, Pebble and Carcass Islands.

CAN WE SEE ALL OF THE ISLANDS IN ONE DAY?

They are only about 15 to 20 minutes away by car, slightly longer by bus or coach. It would take a while to walk and there aren't pavements/sidewalks on the journey there so would be a bit dangerous with traffic, so we do recommend taking a tour there.

HOW FAR IS IT TO GYPSY COVE/ YORKE BAY?

We have five species of penguins: King- the biggest of the five, the biggest colony is at Volunteer's Point although if you are lucky there are often a couple spotted on Yorke Bay most days. Magellanic- (local term- Jackass) you will find these at Gypsy Cove and some at Yorke Bay. Gentoo- find them at Yorke Bay. The next two will only be able to visited if you are on a long-term stay and fly to the outer islands. Macaroni- find these on the Jason Islands, the best site is on Steeple Jason. Southern Rock Hopper- found on the outer islands such as Bleaker and SeaLion Island.

WHAT SPECIES OF PENGUINS LIVE HERE?

As with most, wildlife can't be guaranteed. If you are lucky you may see some dolphins at Yorke Bay or more rare, in the harbour. Sea lions tend to sleep on one of the pontoons near the jetty where the tenders come in to dock. You can take pictures from afar but do not go onto the pontoon.

WILL WE SEE SEALS OR DOLPHINS?

The best overall time would be from November to January. The season is from October to March. October, November and March being the quieter times and the peak is December to February.

WHAT'S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO SEE WILDLIFE?

We don't supply car seats for young children so you would need to supply this yourself if taking Stanley Cabs. These trips are not suitable for pregnant women (go at your own risk), wheelchairs or mobility scooters. You must be fit enough to walk and we do not supply walking poles either. We say this due to places like Gypsy Cove and Yorke Bay not having great accessibility and includes walking on sand, sand dunes, gravel and dirt areas.

ARE YOUR TOURS SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN/ OLDER VISITORS?

Absolutely, you can choose from the tours in the 'Services' page and we can help arrange a tour best suited to you.

CAN YOU CUSTOMISE A TOUR FOR US?

Come dressed with suitable shoes like trainers or hiking boots is best especially if you plan to do lots of walking or want to head to the beaches (Gypsy Cove/ Yorke Bay). Always bring a jacket to put on if cold, windy or rainy- something rainproof and perhaps a cap/hat and gloves. We see a lot of people coming dressed for the runway and it isn't very practical for the tours everyone offers.

DO WE NEED SPECIAL CLOTHING OR FOOTWEAR?

If the weather changes there may be a chance that the cruise ship will cancel coming into port. We don't have any cancellation fees if this happens as it is no ones fault how the weather changes. If you are on a long-term stay, the tour would still go ahead unless you cancel beforehand- this might incur a small percentage fee of the price.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER CHANGES?

There are public toilets by the Jetty Visitor Centre when you arrive at the port. You will find some near the museum and by Gypsy Cove. If you have a longer tour to the countryside such as Bertha's Beach or the Argentine Military Cemetery, then we recommend doing your business before you leave as there will be no toilets...but plenty of open land...if you're not shy!

ARE THERE TOILETS ALONG THE WAY?

Local Loligo squid is a must! (We catch two types of squid in the islands: Loligo which is very small and eaten in the islands and Illex, a bit bigger and mainly exported. Loligo is sold in the form of calamari (squid rings) in most, if not, all restaurants in town. If you are around for longer, a trip to UnWined is a must for a different take on squid- stuffed with chorizo and cheese! Our favourite! Toothfish (Chilean Sea Bass/ Patagonian Toothfish) is another must. It is mild, clean and slightly sweet with a buttery, almost creamy taste. You might be able to find this in the Malvina Restaurant or the Waterfront. Our lamb is rated very high as well, if you get the chance to try it, we 100% recommend! Don't forget to pick up some diddle dee jam or teaberry jam on the way to the gift shops. Perfect on scones or toast!

IS THERE LOCAL FOOD WE SHOULD TRY?

There is mobile signal for local phone sims, although some people have found mobile sim/e-sim providers that allow international roaming in the islands, but it is not necessary to have and is very expensive.

IS THERE MOBILE PHONE SIGNAL/ WI-FI?

Always make sure to check out local souvenir and gift shops. You will find four on the 'front road': Little Harbour Gift Shop (souvenirs including printed clothing, woolly hats, felt items, ceramics and a large crystal collection for the spiritual person). The Capstan Gift Shop (great for historic books, printed clothes and trinkets.) Studio 52 (our favourite for Falklands inspired jewellery, homewares and bath wares, art and ceramics.) The Historic Dockyard Museum Shop (found inside the museum itself, they have some lovely Falkland inspired ceramics and headwear, a good selection of historic books, relics and mementos.) On the Dean Street hill you will find The Wool Shed Shop, the newest souvenir shop, which sells amazing clothing such as hat, socks, cardigans, jumpers and gifts made from 100% Falklands wool.

WHERE CAN WE BUY LOCAL WOOL OR CRAFTS?

Being mindful of the Falklands history is a must. Always be respectful and keep political opinions to yourself- we're all trying to have a lovely day whether it is staff/locals providing good experiences/ living their daily lives or visitors making the most out of their one day to our beautiful islands.

IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULDNT DO HERE?

Stanley is very walkable. Most shops, cafes, memorials and museums are within a 10-15 minute walk, all along the front road.
